Radiocarbon Date Calibration Curve. Based on the Rule of Superposition, certain organisms clearly lived before others, during certain geologic times. In other words, we can say that in relative dating the archaeologist determines that which of the two fossil or the artifacts are older. So to date those, geologists look for layers like volcanic ash that might be sandwiched between the sedimentary layers, and that tend to have radioactive elements. The absolute dating is the technique which tells about the exact age of the artifact or the site using the methods like carbon dating. Leave a Reply Cancel reply.
The relative dating is the technique in the Geology through which the age is determined with relation to the other objects.
Relative Dating vs. Absolute Dating: What's the Difference?
As the word relative tells that defining the object with respect to the other object, it will be pertinent to mention here that actual numerical dates of the rocks or sites are not known in this type of dating. It is a less advanced technique when compared to absolute dating. This evaluation of the rocks and fossils in the relative dating is known as the biostratigraphy. I also like this simple exercise, a spin-off from an activity described on the USGS site above. The main difference between absolute and relative dating is the precision of the measurement.
